We mourn the loss of our esteemed colleague and friend Andrzej Misztal, who played a key role in the work of the Arolsen Archives as Poland’s representative on the International Commission from 2010 to 2022.

Andrzej Misztal was an exceptional individual who saw it as his duty “to make every effort to preserve the archive here in Bad Arolsen for the benefit of humankind, including future generations.” With great dedication and diplomatic skill, Andrzej Misztal worked hard to open the Arolsen Archives to the general public. He also played a key role in the inclusion of our collection in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in 2013. In this photograph taken to mark the occasion, he stands beside Rebecca Boehling, the Director of the Arolsen Archives at the time.

From 2020 onward, he supported the Arolsen Archives in a new role as Senior Advisor for Data Protection. With his profound expertise, intellectual clarity, pragmatism and humility, coupled with a warm heart, he was an indispensable advisor and a deeply valued partner to our organization.

We extend our heartfelt thanks for his tireless dedication, which has left a lasting impact not only on the Arolsen Archives, but also on the international community. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.
