#StolenMemory exhibition focuses
on Spanish victims of the Nazis
From 26 September 2020 to 14 February 2021 the Museu Memorial de l’Exili (MUME) in La Jonquera will host the second #StolenMemory exhibition to be shown in Spain, focusing mainly on Spanish and Catalan victims of the Nazis. The exhibition was created in a cooperation between the MUME, the Memorial Democràtic and Rovira i Virgili University as well as various memorial organisations of relatives of victims of the Nazis.
The 25 posters show the fates of Spaniards who were deported by the Nazis to concentration camps and tell the stories of how their personal belongings were returned to their relatives. In some cases, the Arolsen Archives are still searching for the legal owners. For Miquel Serrano, historian and curator at the MUME, the international #StolenMemory exhibitions are an important part of the search for relatives: “For the first time it’s been possible to bring this initiative from the archive in Bad Arolsen to Spain and Catalonia.” Some personal belongings will be handed over to relatives during the exhibition opening ceremony on 26 September.
